How today’s retail environment is driving future change

In today’s InternetRetailing newsletter, we’re looking to new ways of shopping and selling, while considering the factors that are driving change in the industry.

We report on predictions that the always-on

consumer will drive delivery towards same-day by 2023, and within two hours by 2028, on figures that suggest social media is a priority for retail advertisers this year, and on Slidr, a start-up that’s combining gamification with crowd discounting. These may be new ways to buy and sell but they’re driven by contemporary reasons. The always on customer is moving further towards online shopping, as technology makes ordering and taking delivery ever easier and more convenient, while shoppers are looking for discounts in what many are calling a challenging retail environment.

Today’s figures from the BRC suggest that online is growing, along with food buying, but that offline non-food sales are falling back. The BRC puts this down to hard-pressed consumers who are unwilling to let go of the purse strings. But it’s also an environment that’s currently setting the direction of travel for the retail industry.

We have a newsflash too on the annual Tamebay football tournament. The new-look expanded event – now able to cater for up to 50 teams – is to be held on June 21. This is the sixth annual Ecommerce Cup, in which Tamebay is joined by sister publications InternetRetailing and eDelivery to host the event.

The expansion comes after the cup was last year oversubscribed, with so many players the pre-match briefing had to be held on the pitch.
